The European University Institute in Florence was established in 1972. Through his teaching and research, the institute aims to contribute to the development of European cultural and scientific heritage. Its four departments (History and History of Civilization, Political and Social Sciences, Law, Economics) offer cycles of "mastery" of a year and a PhD from three to four years.
The Institute welcomes young researchers from countries European Union and Switzerland for studies of one to four years. Its purpose is:
  • train young European scholars wishing to obtain a doctorate from the Institute after a cycle of three to four years;
  • ensure further training of young researchers who started thesis in their home university and who wish to present at this university studies after a period of one to two years at the EUI.
Lawyers have the opportunity to obtain one year after the degree of Master of Legal Studies in Comparative European and International Law (LL.M).
Conditions Applicants for admission
Swiss should at least be carriers of a license or a master (he will be given to other diplomas in addition, experience of research or any professional experience); they must have good knowledge of two official languages of the institute (German, English, Danish, French, Greek, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, English). A good command of English is essential in particular in the department of economics and the sciences and social policies.
Applicants propose a research topic that can fit into the curriculum of the institute. The Committee Admission selects candidates based on the quality of their previous studies and opportunities for the Institute for the direction of the thesis and to integrate research in its own program.
Selection Process The eligible candidates for admission can download the registration form on the Institute website. The registration must reach the Institute by e-mail before January 31.
An interview with shortlisted candidates will be held in March / April in Florence. The beginning of the academic year and registration of students in first year are set to 1 September.
Scholarship Students and PhD students admitted to the IUE receive a scholarship of the Swiss Confederation. For this reason, a copy of the application to UIE should be addressed to
